A Guide to Vacation Photos: Capturing the Moments You Will Love Forever

Vacations give us a chance to slow down, explore new places, and reconnect with the people we love. The photos you bring home become part of your family story. With a little intention, you can create images that feel as warm and meaningful as the experiences themselves. Start with people, not just scenery

Destination views are beautiful, but the heart of any great photo is the connection between the people in it. Focus on the small interactions. Capture someone’s laugh, a quiet moment at breakfast, or kids running toward the water. The fast expanse of the west is a beautiful picture to capture, but one or two do the job and then focus on what will change in the coming years, your loved ones These natural moments are what families treasure most and what I aim to highlight in all my family photography sessions across Plainfield and the Chicagoland area.

Light highlights what your eye sees

Choose light that feels like vacation
Golden hour just after sunrise or before sunset is ideal for soft, flattering light. This is the light where you may not need sunglasses or feel you need to squint. When I photograph clients for outdoor sessions, this is the light I rely on when a flash is not available. On vacation, do the same. Indoors, look for windows and avoid harsh overhead lighting. Natural light gives your images a calm, timeless feel. The light creates a spotlight on the important subject and directs a viewer what to focus on in your picture. Search out shadows casting on the floor, walls or items of interest. Once you see the shadow it becomes easier to see the light.

Mix posed images with candid ones

A couple of posed shots ensure everyone is included, but the candid moments often become favorites. Let your family interact naturally. Think of these as mini lifestyle sessions you direct yourself. Hands holding ice cream cones, sandy footprints, or someone marveling at a sunset all help tell the bigger story of your trip.

Try new anges and perspectives

Shift your viewpoint to add variety. Shoot from above, from ground level, or move in close to capture details. These subtle changes create more dynamic galleries and mirror the creative perspective I bring to my family and branding photography work through Carrie White Photography. It does not matter whether you use a digital camera or phone, just capture the moment. Learn a little more about capturing pictures with your phone.

Put the camera down when you need to

Some moments are better lived than documented. You will create better images when you allow yourself to be present. The photos you do capture will feel more authentic and you will have the memory of the moment rather than seeing moments pass behind a lens.
