You coordinated your outfits perfectly and chosen the most stunning location. But aside from the clothing and backdrops how else can your family portrait be more memorable and meaningful? Sometimes it is the smallest details that can make your family photo stand out from all the others…consider a natural prop.
Just about anything can be used as a prop, but consider what is around you as the perfect option. The right prop will not only give you something to interact with and make you feel more comfortable in front of the camera but can also share who you are as a family.
When choosing a perfect prop for your family portrait session consider these couple suggestions. Look for unique trees with odd branch shapes or trees that are planted in lines to pull attention to you the subject of the photo. Are there fences available to lean against or sit on? Large boulder or rocks can add great texture or a perfect place to sit or lean against. Buildings, architecture and artwork are also props that add interest to a family portrait. Don’t forget color! Color is HUGE in pictures and helps to create harmony and pull everything together.
And of course, props aren’t needed or expected. In fact many of my family sessions don’t have props, but I always consider what is available around us to make a picture more interesting and create wow!
