Headshot Makeup Tips

by Carrie White Photography Headshots, Portraits, Seniors

Headshot Makeup Tips

Creating a flawless look for headshots to enhance natural beauty.

  1. Less is More. The goal of headshot makeup is to enhance natural features, not to create a dramatic look. Use a light hand when applying makeup.
  2. Start with Skincare. Begin with a clean and moisturized face. Well-hydrated skin provides a smoother canvas for makeup application.
  3. Foundation and Concealer.

    • Use a foundation that matches skin tone. Test it on the jawline to ensure a seamless blend.
    • Apply concealer to cover any blemishes, dark circles, or imperfections.

  4. Powder Sparingly. Use a translucent setting powder to reduce shine, but avoid applying too much, as it can make the skin look dry in photographs.
  5. Eye Makeup.

    • Natural eye makeup works best. Neutrals and soft shades are great choices.
    • Keep eyes simple by defining with eyeliner.
    • Use mascara to make the lashes pop.

  6. Eyebrows.

    • Groomed eyebrows frame the face; shape and fill them in if necessary.
    • Avoid heavy, overly dramatic brows.

  7. Blush and Bronzer.

    • Apply a natural blush to the apples of the cheeks for a healthy flush.
    • Consider a touch of bronzer to add warmth to the face, but don’t overdo it.

  8. Lips.

    • Opt for a neutral or slightly darker lip color that complements skin tone.
    • Use lip liner to define the lips, if desired.

  9. Matte Finish. Recommend matte makeup products to reduce shine, as glossy finishes can reflect light in unflattering ways.
  10. Setting Spray. Finish with a setting spray which helps makeup last throughout the photoshoot.
  11. Test Before the Shoot. Test makeup in different lighting conditions before the actual photoshoot to ensure it looks natural and flattering.
  12. Bring Touch-Up Essentials. If possible, bring extra makeup for touch-ups during the shoot, especially if it’s a lengthy session.
  13. Avoid Trendy Styles. Suggest avoiding trendy makeup styles that might date the headshot. Classic and timeless makeup looks are typically the best choice.
  14. Consult a Makeup Artist. If you are unsure about makeup application, I can help and offer professional makeup artist service with headshot photo sessions.

Remember, the goal of headshot makeup is to enhance natural beauty and create a polished, professional appearance. It should be subtle and photograph well under various lighting conditions.  Schedule a professional headshot photography session through the contact page.
